IP Ratings Explained

Our lights are given an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, which indicates how resistant our fixtures are against dust and moisture, ensuring both performance and safety.

IP ratings explained

Defined by the IEC 60529 standard, these ratings consist of two digits after the IP element: the first digit (0-6) specifies protection against solid objects, such as dust, while the second digit (0-9) indicates resistance to moisture and humidity ingress.

The higher these numbers, the better the level of protection against each.

Most indoor lighting will typically carry an IP20 rating. This level of protection is suitable for areas like living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. IP20 rated lights may also be installed above a kitchen or utility sink, provided they are positioned at least 60 cm away from the tap.

Our Hicks, Spencer, Athena and Dante Wall Lights are all rated IP20.

Bathroom lighting

Having the right IP rating is essential for certain areas of your bathroom to ensure safety and functionality in moist environments.

Bathrooms are divided into zones 0-3, with regulations setting out what types of lighting can be safely used in each one.

Zone 0 is typically high moisture areas, inside a bath or shower tray where lights must be rated IP65 or higher. Whilst Zone 3 are known as ‘outside zones’ where typically the presence of moisture will be minimal.

IP RATED ZONES

Zone 0 - Within the bath or shower. Any fixtures here must have a low voltage (max 12v) and be rated at least IP67 for total immersion. (We currently have no suitable fittings for Zone 0.)

Zone 1 - The area above the bath, up to 225cm high. A minimum IP44 rating is required.

Zone 2 - Extends 60cm outside the bath and up to 225cm high. It is also good practice to consider the area within 60cm of any tap around a wash basin as Zone 2. A minimum IP44 rating is required.

Zone 3 - Includes areas outside zones 0, 1 and 2, where no water jets are expected. Generally no IP rating is required, but as with all bathrooms we would not recommend using pendants or wall lights with fabric shades in these areas.

Our IP44 Rated Lighting

Our Ruben, Ebony and Edington Wall Lights are IP44 rated, indicating they are protected against water splashes from any direction. This means they can be placed in bathrooms and powder rooms within a 60cm perimeter from the edge of a sink, bath or shower and to a height of 225cm from the floor.
