Laura Hammett is proud to be a steering committee member and apprentice provider for United In Design, a charity established in 2021 as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement to address the lack of diversity and inclusion in the Interior Design industry.
United in Design aims to bring people of colour and from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds into the industry by offering mentoring, apprenticeships and educational outreach to graduates in the design industry - creating an equal opportunity pathway to entry. Thus far, Laura has mentored two apprentices through this programme, and is looking forward to welcoming the third United In Design apprentice into the studio in 2024.
Laura Hammett is an equal opportunities employer. Creating an inclusive and diverse company culture has always been important to Laura and Aaron Hammett. They invest in D&I training for all employees, uphold a non-negotiable set of company values and vow to act if these standards are ever broken.
Furnishing Futures, is a charity that fully furnishes the homes of women and children placed into social housing after fleeing domestic abuse.
Less than 2% of social housing comes furnished, so all too often these families are rehomed into completely empty flats with bare floorboards and no basic household appliances. Without the means to buy furniture, many of these families are experiencing furniture poverty, leaving parents with the stark choice of either living without furniture or taking out expensive loans, perpetuating a cycle of poverty that can be hard to break.
Furnishing Futures uses trauma-informed design to create beautiful homes for women and children, using furniture and homewares donated by the interiors industry and the public. These safe spaces nurture and uplift women and children who have experienced domestic abuse or are living with the impact of poverty.
Laura Hammett passionately supports the important work Furnishing Futures are doing and is currently involved in the transformation of a seven-bedroom womens refuge in London, named 'Project Haven'. This is an innovative and exciting charity project, the first of its kind, supported by the Major of London. Alongside other designers, Laura and her studio team are donating their time, design-skills and industry contacts to completely re-design and refurbish the space using trauma-informed design principles.
They will create welcoming spaces where women and children escaping domestic violence can feel safe and at home. We are proud to support this incredible charity and hope you will be too, therefore we are giving you the chance to add an optional donation when completing your purchase.
