There are certain materials that never lose their appeal. They transcend the changing trends, acquire more character over time and bring an unmistakable sense of craftsmanship to a space. Burl walnut is one of those rare materials.
When I design furniture for the LHL collection, every material is chosen not only for its beauty but for its longevity. I have always believed that truly elevated interiors are built on timeless foundations, and burl walnut perfectly embodies that philosophy. Rich in character and entirely unique, it is a finish that celebrates nature's artistry whilst lending warmth, depth and sophistication to contemporary living.
Our Goodwin Desk, Grove Bedside, Grove Coffee Table and Burns Side Table showcase burl walnut in a way that feels both elegant and enduring, allowing the extraordinary nature of the timber to become the focal point of each design.
What Makes Burl Walnut So Special
What makes burl walnut so special is, unlike traditional walnut veneers, burl walnut is created from a rare growth, or burl, found on the tree where the grain has developed in an intricate and highly unpredictable pattern. This natural phenomenon produces swirling knots, clusters of 'eyes' and beautifully flowing grain that simply cannot be replicated.
No two sheets of burl walnut are ever identical. Every piece tells its own story through its organic markings, making each item of furniture inherently unique.
This individuality is precisely what makes burl walnut so sought after within fine furniture making. It is a material that reveals new details as the light changes throughout the day. The rich honey, caramel and chocolate tones found within the grain create exceptional depth, allowing the furniture to feel layered, luxurious and effortlessly timeless.
A Celebration of Craftsmanship
Working with burl walnut requires exceptional precision.
I find the beauty of the material lies in its complexity, and preserving the integrity of the grain demands meticulous craftsmanship throughout the full manufacturing process. Each veneer is carefully selected and expertly laid to ensure the natural pattern flows harmoniously across every surface.
Rather than overpowering the material with unnecessary embellishment, our approach has always been to allow the timber itself to take centre stage.
The result is furniture that feels quietly confident - pieces that reveal their craftsmanship through proportion, detailing and the natural beauty of the materials.
The Goodwin Desk
The Goodwin Desk was designed as a contemporary interpretation of a classic executive desk.
Whether placed within a dedicated study or incorporated into a multifunctional living space, it offers a refined balance between practicality and elegance. The clean architectural lines provide the perfect canvas for the expressive burl walnut veneer, whose rich figuring softens the geometry of the design and introduces warmth.
It is a desk designed not only for working, but for living beautifully. One that feels equally at home in a traditional townhouse or a contemporary apartment, becoming more characterful with every passing year.
The Grove Collection
The Grove Bedside and Grove Coffee Table continue this dialogue between sculptural simplicity and exceptional materials.
Both pieces embrace restrained silhouettes that allow the burl walnut to become the defining feature. The organic movement within the grain creates a striking contrast against the clean lines, ensuring each piece feels luxurious without ever being overstated.
In a bedroom, the Grove Bedside introduces richness and warmth, elevating what is often one of the most functional pieces of furniture into something deeply decorative.
Within a living room, the Grove Coffee Table becomes a natural focal point, where the distinctive grain draws the eye and encourages closer appreciation of the craftsmanship involved.
Designed to Last Generations
One of the defining characteristics of burl walnut is its enduring appeal.
While many finishes come and go with changing trends, beautifully crafted walnut furniture has remained desirable for centuries. It evolves gracefully, developing greater richness over time while retaining the elegance that first made it so coveted.
This longevity is something I consider throughout every design. I never want our furniture to feel tied to a particular moment or era. Instead, I want it to become part of the timeless story of a home - pieces that can move with a family, adapt to changing interiors and be enjoyed for generations.
For me, true luxury is found in authenticity and lies in materials that reveal more beauty the longer you live with them.
It is the tactile quality of beautifully finished timber, the subtle variations that remind us a material comes from nature, and the craftsmanship required to transform it into something extraordinary.
Burl walnut captures all of these qualities. Its individuality, warmth and unmistakable richness make it one of my favourite materials to work with, and one that perfectly reflects the values of the LHL collection.
The Goodwin Desk, Burns Side Table and Grove collection were designed to celebrate this remarkable timber - not simply as furniture, but as future heirlooms. Pieces that quietly command attention today and remain just as relevant, beautiful and cherished for many years to come.
